Lorton is named after a village in England. The area was settled by Joseph Plaskett. The pioneer opened a post office in 1875. In 1955, a missile site was built. The missile remained in the area until 1973. Lorton also has an Amtrak station that carries passengers and automobiles to Sanford, FL. In 2010, the population was 18,610.
Gunston Hall is close to the Mason Neck Peninsula. The home is situated atop a hill, and it has beautiful panoramic views. Throughout the year, the mansion has several indoor and outdoor events. Mason Neck is a few miles from Washington DC. The park has several trails, and you might see wild turkeys, deer and eagles. Fair Winds Brewing Company has a relaxed atmosphere. The company offers a large variety of beers, and the bartenders will let you sample the beers. There is a food truck outside the brewing company.
In the summer, locals and visitors cool off at Pirate's Cove Water Park. The park has swim areas for children and adults. The park is in a convenient location, and the friendly staff can answer your questions. Laurel Hill Golf Club is quite popular, and the club hosted a famous golf tournament in 2013.
Lorton has great schools at every grade level. South County Middle School has an above average rating. In 2015, the average standardized test score was 76 percent. The school ranks better than 88 percent of the middle schools in Virginia.
